Dr. Bertrand Kaper M.D.

Dr. Bertrand Kaper has been an orthopedic surgeon in Arizona since 1999. Dr. Kaper is a fellowship-trained joint replacement surgeon, specializing in treating hip pain, knee pain, and shoulder pain. He has vast clinical experience, having performed more than 14,000 surgeries. He is an attending surgeon and chairman of the Department of Surgery and Section Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at HonorHealth Scottsdale - Thompson Peak in Scottsdale.

Dr. Kaper earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biological Sciences, with Honors, from the University of Chicago, and his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, in Chicago. He started his training with an Internship in General Surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Dr. Kaper then completed a Residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. In addition to his residency training, Dr. Kaper completed an Adult Reconstructive Fellowship at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada. This fellowship provided Dr. Kaper the opportunity to train with several internationally renowned orthopedic surgeons in the field of joint replacement surgery, providing him with the foundation of his practice today.

Since adopting robotic technology into his surgical practice in 2012, he has performed over 2000 knee replacement surgeries. As a recognition of his contributions to the evolving field of robotic knee surgery, Dr. Kaper was recently chosen as one of the Top Knee Replacement Surgeons in United States.  

Certifications and Qualifications

Board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Kaper is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and a member of the American Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons, Western Orthopaedic Association, and Arizona Medical Association.

Dr. Kaper is the Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Chief of the Orthopedic Section at the HonorHealth Thompson Peak Medical Center, one of the top joint replacement hospitals in the United States.  He also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Midwestern University, Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine in Glendale, AZ. Dr. Kaper has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and is a regular presenter at international scientific and medical conferences. As part of his commitment to the advancement of orthopedic surgery, he is a frequent faculty teacher at national orthopedic meetings - educating other orthopedic surgeons in the techniques of robotic-assisted knee replacement and Direct Anterior total hip replacement.

Robotic-Assisted Surgery

Dr. Kaper has been a pioneer in the use of the most advanced surgical equipment available to orthopedic surgeons. Over the past twelve years, he has performed over 2000 robotic knee replacement surgeries.  During this time, Dr. Kaper has participated in the research and clinical development of the CORI (formerly known as NAVIO) robotic platform that is in worldwide application.  Using robotic assistance, a higher level of accuracy and precision is used to facilitate the optimal outcomes for his patients.

Sherry Booz, NP

Sherry Booz is our practice Adult Nurse Practitioner.   She graduated from the University of Missouri, Kansas City in 2003 with her Master of Science in Nursing degree as a nurse practitioner.   

For the past ten years, she has specialized in the care of orthopedic patients.  This has included work at HonorHealth as the NP for the post-op orthopaedic care coordinator.  Sherry joined Orthopaedic Specialists of Scottsdale in 2017.  She provides both out-patient and in-patient care for our patients at the Scottsdale office and at the Thompson Peak Medical Center.

Sherry and her husband moved to the Valley in 2008 and have fallen in love with Arizona.  She enjoys hiking and reading but most of all playing with her grandson.

Emily Foley PA-C

Emily Foley is the surgical Physician Assistant to Dr. Kaper specializing in Orthopedic Surgery of the knee, hip and shoulder. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Hamilton College where she played varsity soccer. She graduated from Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona with a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies in 2020. 

Her clinical training was completed at a variety of hospitals in the valley. She is board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. She assists in surgery and serves patients in pre- and post-operative care. Emily enjoys working out, cooking and playing with her dog.

Wes Wagar PA-C

Wes Wagar is our Physician Assistant for the Prescott Valley office.  He is a certified PA with extensive experience all aspects of Orthopedic Surgery- with special interests in arthritis, sports medicine and general orthopedics. His career in medicine started in 1994 as a Physical Therapist Assister, certified Athletic Trainer and Certified strength and conditioning specialist. He attended Central Washington University gaining his degree in Physical Education: Exercise Science and Athletic Training, then completed his education as a Physical Therapist Assistant at Green River Community College. After working as a Physical Therapist Assistant and Athletic Trainer-Certified for seven years, he attended the University of Washington where he received his certification as a Physician Assistant. In 2001 Wes began working as a Physician Assistant-Certified in Orthopedic Surgery and Neurosurgery.

Non-profit Work

Dr. Kaper is also the founder and chairman of the board for Operation Walk International, a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization. This organization is dedicated to providing free hip and knee replacement surgery to patients in underdeveloped countries.

Since 2007, Dr. Kaper and his team have participated in seventeen mission trips.  These missions have included time in Antigua, Guatemala, Cuenca, Ecuador and most recently in Medellin, Colombia. Access to life-changing surgery, such as hip and knee replacements is extremely limited in these countries.  During this missions, they have performed over 750 free hip and knee replacements-  surgeries that dramatically change the patient's ability to walk and live.
